Spiti Valley — the ‘Middle Land’ between India and Tibet — is one of the last untouched Himalayan landscapes. High passes, ancient monasteries and skies so dark you can see the Milky Way with your naked eye. Here’s how to road-trip Spiti the right way.
Best time for a Spiti road trip
May – October: all routes open. June–September is the most reliable window (clear roads, no snow blockage).
December – March: Spiti is accessible only via Shimla–Kinnaur (Manali side closes due to snow at Kunzum Pass). Magical winter Spiti — but only for prepared travellers.
Two route options
- Loop: Delhi → Shimla → Sangla → Kalpa → Nako → Tabo → Kaza → Chandratal → Manali → Delhi (recommended for acclimatisation)
- Quick: Manali → Kunzum Pass → Kaza → back via same route
8-day Spiti itinerary (loop)
| Day | Route |
|---|---|
| 1 | Delhi → Shimla (overnight) |
| 2 | Shimla → Sangla (Kinnaur Valley) |
| 3 | Sangla → Kalpa (Kinnaur Kailash views) |
| 4 | Kalpa → Tabo via Nako (1,000-year-old monastery) |
| 5 | Tabo → Kaza via Dhankar & Pin Valley |
| 6 | Kaza — Key, Kibber, Komic, Hikkim (highest post office) |
| 7 | Kaza → Chandratal Lake (camping) |
| 8 | Chandratal → Manali via Atal Tunnel → Delhi |
Altitude & safety tips
- Average elevation 3,500–4,500 m. Acclimatise gradually via the Shimla route.
- Carry Diamox (consult doctor), ORS, paracetamol, basic first aid.
- Fuel at Kaza is the last reliable pump — always tank up.
- BSNL is the only working network beyond Reckong Peo.
- Carry cash — ATMs are unreliable.
Vehicle tip: An SUV/4x4 is recommended (Mahindra Thar, Scorpio, Innova). Sedans struggle on Kunzum Pass.
